D1NZ Touches base with Wellingtons Drift Inc

TEAM REVIEW - DRIFT INC

Following through the D1 season, The Rookies of D1NZ compete from far and wide; one group that has been standing out from the rest to me is Wellingtons Drift Inc.

The Drift Inc boys dedicate huge amounts of time and effort to come to The D1NZ National Drifting Championship Rookie Rounds country wide - often seeing chains of 6 drift cars or more hailing from Wellington and the surrounding areas heading to the championship, its pretty dope to say the least

D1NZ is always keen to support the boys so we thought we would start a monthly Colum on drift crews from around Aotearoa, obviously this month were introducing Drift inc – I asked local man Darren Rangitihi “Koro D”who seems to be kind of like the general of the group, here’s what he had to say

Nau mai Haere mai

Drift Inc; The Subtle Art of Sideways Driving

Drift Inc was formed in 2002 by a bunch of 7 Tawa college friends plus one of the parents, from an idea whilst playing PlayStation Gran Tourismo and listening to Gansta Rap.

We had been to a couple of track/open days at Manfield Auto-course and the Manfield rounds of D1NZ, which lead on to the D1NZ final at Pukekohe where JT won the first D1NZ, all the time fuelling the enthusiasm to create our own club and pursue the “Subtle Art of Sideways Driving”.

We ventured out onto the streets, then got invited to participate in some local car club Motokhana’s and Autocross events, this gave us more fuel for our new found passion.

We started out with an R33 GTS25t coupe, VY2 Commodore, N/A manual Cefiro, two BMW’s, and a C33 and gradually built up from there. We have had a few changes of cars for the bulk of the crew and still have the R33 coupe and the second version of the first Cefiro?

The colour scheme was based on the Cefiro being used as a taxi, so we went with the New York Cab theme and added a black roof which matches up well with the Wellington representation, intentionally not painting the bonnet or boot, as that seemed to be what everyone else was doing. As with everything about the club all work and prep’ was done in house, on very small budgets. We still use “G Workshop” our in-house mechanical workshop with a wealth of knowledge and experience in all things automotive.

We have been having a great time Drifting @ Slipway here in Wellington, the core of Drifters coming up for practice is growing steadily, Slipway Driving/Drifting Facility is a purpose built, sealed surface setup with movable barriers, to allow changes based on the type of use, Slipway is used by a few of the local Car Enthusiast Clubs, Motorsport Clubs, Bucket Racing, Super Moto and local Drifters.

We have been practicing Drifting for around 4 years and have come to realise the dream of competing at a National level.

Peace out...
